Nov. 29—VERMILLION — It was a new game but the same result for the University of South Dakota football team in a rematch against Drake on Saturday afternoon.

For the second time this season, the 11th-seeded Coyotes controlled their challengers from the non-scholarship Pioneer League, sending USD sailing into the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs with a 38-17 victory at the DakotaDome.

USD (9-4) advances to play No. 6 seed Mercer in the second round on Dec. 6, in Macon, Georgia.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Coyotes, whose lead was 17-10 at halftime compared to a 28-7 advantage at the midway point when the Bulldogs visited on Sept. 20. But Aidan Bouman tossed three touchdown passes in the second half, helping USD pull away after the break. The Coyotes led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Bouman finished 15 of 20 passing for 261 yards and four touchdowns, with top target Larenzo Fenner hauling in five receptions for 115 yards and three scores. Jack Martens grabbed the fourth scoring strike from Bouman, while L.J. Phillips Jr. churned out 132 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.
