The Gunners made the trip to Stamford Bridge without centre-half Gabriel Magalhaes, who is ruled out until the end of December with a thigh injury.

‘Yesterday in training he was uncomfortable, so we need to explore a little bit more what happened,’ Arteta said ahead of kick-off.

‘I don’t think it’s something major, but enough not to be involved in the game.’

Mikel Arteta has selected two of his summer signings in their place with Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera starting for the first time together at centre-half at Stamford Bridge.

Viktor Gyokeres is back in the Arsenal squad having missed the last four games.
