Chris Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter movies and introduced the world to the magnificent Wizarding World, but before that, he showed the world what a kid can do in the face of grave danger when alone at home. Home Alone is a beloved classic that has entertained generations, especially during the holidays. Since it's that time of the year, the movie has resurfaced on streaming services.
Home Alone has found its way to Netflix’s global top 10 list at the 7th spot, per FlixPatrol. The movie is every parent's nightmare and every kid's dream scenario. Macaulay Culkin plays eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, who defends his home from a pair of robbers by outsmarting them and laying booby traps, after his family accidentally leaves him behind on their Christmas vacation. It was a critical and commercial hit, earning $476.7 million at the box office and garnering a 66% Rotten Tomatoes rating from the critics and an 80% from the audience.
The movie has a fantastic ensemble, including Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as thieves Harry and Marv, respectively, who try to rob the McCallister home, and Catherine O'Hara plays Kevin’s mother, Kate. Also starring are Roberts Blossom, Gerry Bamman, John Heard, Kieran Culkin, and many more. The movie’s success was followed up with a sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which is another great holiday watch, and more sequels that fans were less enthusiastic about.
Chris Columbus Is Making ‘Gremlins 3’
In his long career, Columbus has given us many brilliant franchises that are part of many '90s kids' childhoods. He'll soon be reviving the nostalgia with the third installment of Gremlins. It was recently announced that Columbus is set to direct and produce. Further, Steven Spielberg is returning as executive producer for the highly anticipated project. No cast or story details were revealed for the long-overdue threequel. What took Gremlins 3 so long is the right idea, as the team behind the scenes did not want to make a movie just for the sake of it. Columbus previously explained:
“There has to be a reason for doing it. It has to be more than just, 'Okay, we'll do great at the box office with the title.' It has to be something that the fans are proud of, something that we're proud of that also all of the fans can say, 'Okay, they did a great job on this film.' So, we're very, very specific about making sure it's great.”
Home Alone is streaming on Netflix, while Gremlins 3 is set for a November 19, 2027, release date. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the threequel.
