Leaders know how to read the room, and to his credit, team owner Jerry Jones was ahead of the curve in the early stages of November when he engineered a series of roster moves that have jump started the franchise. The Cowboys have strung together three straight victories since the trade deadline, and with a win at Ford Field over Detroit next Thursday, they could find themselves returning to the postseason.

Although these clubs have squared off three times in the actual playoffs, next Thursday’s regular season showdown in Motown will also have a playoff type feel with the winner greatly enhancing its odds of playing meaningful football come January.

Lomas Brown was a seven time Pro Bowl selection, a member of the Detroit Lions All Time Team who currently serves as a game analyst on local radio on WXYT. Lomas joined Sporting News with an overview of what is on the line. “Everything is at stake for these teams on Thursday night. This is a must win, not only to stay in the playoff hunt, but also to gain some momentum and hopefully put some games together in a row to finish out the season. The Lions specifically have not lost back to back games since October of 2022.”

When asked about the Lions’ recent defensive woes, Lomas offered this assessment. “A pass rush has to be generated as quarterbacks have had too much time back in the pocket, and the defense just is not affecting them early or often over the last stretch of games. Penalties have also hurt us this year. It is the timing of when they have occurred, crucial stages, and it would help if some people could get healthy.”

On that front, Amon-Ra St. Brown is expected to miss multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain, which will aid the Cowboys in their quest to keep the wins piling up in the column.
