Puka Nacua has made plenty of eye-popping, “did that just happen?” type catches in his football career.

On Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Rams star receiver might have made his best yet, though.

It’s already being tabbed as a catch of the year candidate.

The setup

Los Angeles faced a second-and-11 at the Carolina 38, with the Rams trailing the Panthers 24-21 with just under 11 minutes remaining.

On the play, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford took a quick three-step drop in the pocket, then floated a pass down the left sideline to Nacua.

The former BYU and Orem High standout made a leaping attempt, snagging the ball with his right hand and then securing it against his body as he fell to the field.

Nacua’s catch comes at a critical moment

That 31-yard reception set up a go-ahead 7-yard touchdown run from Kryen Williams on the next play to give Los Angeles a 28-24 lead.

Nacua, who is third in the NFL in both receptions (86) and receiving yards (1,039) this season, ended the day with six catches for 72 yards in a Panthers 31-28 win.

He surpassed the 1,000-yards receiving mark Sunday for the second time in his three NFL seasons and still has five weeks to add to that total.

Another catch of the year candidate — from the Raiders’ Brock Bowers

It was a good day in the NFL for unforgettable catches.

Later in the day, Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers had a touchdown reception that challenged Nacua’s for catch of the year.

In the Raiders’ 31-14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Bowers went low to make the one-hand grab for the score in yet another impressive showcase of athleticism.

Still, Nacua’s circus catch had social media buzzing — a few people even referenced former New York Giants receiver Odell Beckman Jr.’s iconic one-handed grab for a touchdown in 2014 when discussing Nacua’s feat.
