Landman season 2, episode 3, "Almost a Home," features several intriguing developments that offer viewers new perspectives of their favorite characters in different settings – and the problems that come with them.
After splitting with Cooper in Landman season 2, episode 2, Ariana takes a job as a bartender at The Patch – giving her a rude awakening about the locals and regulars. Tommy also gets a better understanding of who his new business partner is, the duplicitous cartel boss Gallino, who operates as an investor under the alias Danny Morrell.
The most fascinating – and intense– development in this Landman episode was the H2S gas exposure that nearly killed Dale, Boss, and two others. This type of thrilling yet educational action sequence is part of what makes Landman so immersive, while also further detailing how dangerous this line of work can be.
On top of all this, Cami, Rebecca, and Nathan discover that despite M-Tex's status in the oil industry, it is surprisingly lacking in funds due to Monty's extreme risk tolerance. They scramble to find a way to keep their enterprise afloat, which leads to Danny offering to swoop in as an angel investor right in the nick of time.
Landman Season 2 Balances Tension & Heart As M-Tex's Corporate Drama Heats Up
With its latest installment, Landman season 2 is establishing itself more as a corporate drama than ever before. With Cooper having some skin in the game that thoughtfully connects him to Danny and the cartel, the main narrative in Landman season 2 feels more oriented around the day-to-day business operations and various crises that emerge in Monty's wake.
Compared to a thrilling and fast-paced show like Mayor of Kingstown, another Paramount+ streaming hit co-created by Taylor Sheridan, Landman is not afraid to allow its scenes to breathe. In fact, it insists on it in season 2, episode 3, as an unexpected run-in with Danny at a club leads Cami and Tommy into murky waters over several rounds of drinks and conversation.
Tommy, unlike Cami, knows what Danny is capable of, and he is sure to be a major player throughout the rest of the season. The drinks and pleasantries feel very much like the calm before the storm. If Cami takes an investment from Danny, who is doing a convincing job of demonstrating that he's amicable and trustworthy, it could spell disaster for everyone involved – except the cartel.
The thing about Landman, though, is that you never know what's around the corner, and right now, it's still unclear whether Danny will stand as a friend or foe. Thankfully, Tommy trusts his instincts and knows Danny's friendship comes with enormous liability, which could be the final push that crumbles M-Tex's house of cards. That's a bet that Tommy is not willing to make, but he may not have a choice.
Landman Is Gradually Becoming A Family-Focused Neo-Western Epic Like Yellowstone

The characters may not be very different compared to the first season, even though many circumstances have changed, but it is evident that the scale of Landman in season 2 has evolved and expanded. In several narrative ways, it's already starting to feel much broader than season 1's scope was, covering not only new avenues of the oil industry but those of a slate of main characters as well.
While Angela and Ainsley remain somewhat one-dimensional so far, Cami is rightfully given much greater depth and screen time in Landman season 2. Her heart-wrenching emotional breakdown at the end of the episode, mourning Monty's death and releasing pent-up grief, was a memorable and haunting note to conclude on. Perhaps it's also a foreshadowing of the woe that lies ahead.
Throughout three episodes, Landman season 2 feels like it's putting "family first" at the core of the series, rather than sharing that sentiment with the existential threats posed by the cartel and Cooper's enemies in season 1. Instead of vengeful bullies or hotheaded gangsters, the killers in Landman season 2 move in silence – the H2S gas could be symbolic of Danny, a potential devil in disguise.
Landman is doubling down on its family themes with its second season, which is a relief after season 1 mostly cast Cooper astray. Tommy and Angela's chaotic love history seems to have found a bit of stability after this episode, and Cami is seen much more like a part of the extended Norris family than Monty ever was.
Considering the introduction of Sam Elliott's T.L. and Tommy's mother's funeral still set to take place in a future episode, Landman season 2 is scaling itself up to be a modern neo-Western epic like Yellowstone while always keeping home in its heart.
