Welcome to the Morning Commute

Sorry for the delay. Today we are talking about College Football!

With the college football regular season officially over, an interesting dilemma approached and has since led to a lot of conversation.

Because of the timing of the College Football Playoff — which Ole Miss is in for the first time in program history — LSU was on a clock to make a decision and lock in a coach before other teams did. The result? A messy goodbye for Kiffin.

Kiffin wanted to coach his team during the playoff, but because he is now an opponent of Ole Miss, they obviously declined. After all, would they really want to give Kiffin more of an opportunity to steal all their players and keep growing his name in the recruitment world?

Along with Kiffin there were also moves for other SEC teams like Florida, who ended up getting their guy in Tulane’s Jon Sumrall.

Florida picked up South Florida’s Alex Golesh, who was very linked with Arkansas, while Arkansas grabbed Memphis’ Ryan Silverfield. Ole Miss promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to be its 40th head coach this afternoon.

We have more discussion on football and basketball, diving into prospects, visits and PFF grades in the Rock M+ forums. Most recently, we’ve got more discussion on the coaching carousel.

Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+

  • Study Hall from Sam Snelling: Mizzou 86, Cleveland State 59

I’m beginning to be concerned about the turnover problem. Missouri just isn’t clean with the basketball the way they’ve (largely) been since Gates has taken over. Their worst season was two years ago and the TOR was still under 17%, this year they’re at 19.2%. So with 16 turnovers, and 27 three point misses, a 1.23 points per possession is pretty incredible.

Despite an undefeated start, the Tigers didn’t look perfect against Dennis Gates’ former school. Check out Sam’s Study Hall!

  • Pourover from Sam: The thin margins in the SEC

The Missouri administration is banking that Drinkwitz can keep this train rolling. He’s shown a predilection for building the right kind of culture, a belief that Missouri can win those close games. The roster itself is close to being there, too. There will be transfer decisions, and draft decisions to be made, of course. And while the 9 game conference slate will change a lot of dynamics in the coming seasons, Mizzou seems ready and willing to embrace the challenge with their newly extended head football coach.

As we’ve seen on Sunday, Drinkwitz staying was a best-case-scenario for Mizzou as who knows what would’ve happened to the team’s players and coaching staff.

  • Mizzou Football Sidebar from Rory Whetstone: Tigers Run Game Roars to Life in Second Half

With both running backs rushing for at least 100 yards, it marks the third time the pair has hit that mark this season.

Additionally, the pair are just the fifth and sixth rushers Arkansas has allowed all season to pass the three-digit mark.

Bread and butter. Milk and cookies. Batman and Robin. Support the pair anyway you can to make sure they are retained for next season.

Ahmad Hardy seems to impress every week but it doesn’t seem like many teams can stop Jamal Roberts either… Might be a shout to the offensive line who originally had major questions coming into the season.

Over at Rock M+ we have more Mizzou football discussion in forums ahead of bowl season, and basketball discussion ahead of SEC play.
