Troll is one of Netflix’s most successful film releases, and now fans of the action/adventure flick can get stuck into the sequel.

As of today, Troll 2 is streaming on the platform for subscribers.

Released in December 2022, Troll followed a courageous palaeontologist on a mission to prevent disaster after an explosion in the mountains awakened, you guessed it, an ancient troll.

Filming took place across Norway, with actress Ine Marie Wilmann taking the lead as palaeontologist Nora Tidemann, while Ameli Olving Sælevik played her younger version.

Troll continues to accumulate positive reviews, but it also has the figures to back them up, having become Netflix’s most-watched non-English language movie ever at the time with more than 103million views.

The trailer for Troll 2 landed in July, teasing what kind of threat Nora and her team were to face next.

Again inspired by Norwegian folklore, the sequel is based on a project to build a railway through the Dovre Mountains and how it awakens a sleeping giant after 1,000 years of captivity.

As you’d expect, the creature begins destroying anything and everything in its path, forcing the government to intervene and request the services of Professor Tidemann.

She, along with her father (Gard B. Eidsvold) and her motley crew of assistants, unite for their most perilous operation to date: racing against the clock to save Oslo before the monster’s demolition becomes uncontrollable.

With the odds stacked against them, Troll 2 really cranks up the thrill, having also been ruled the largest film production ever in the Nordic countries.

And for those apprehensive about the sequel standing up to the first film, it might be of some assurance to know that the same creative team has returned to helm Troll 2.

Troll 2 is written by Espen Aukan, directed by Roar Uthaug, and produced by Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud from Motion Blur.

Filmmaker Uthaug told Tudum ahead of the sequel’s release: ‘I am beyond proud of how audiences around the globe connected with the first Troll film far beyond what we imagined.’

On what audiences can expect next, he shared: ‘With the sequel, we are aiming high—expanding the scope, deepening the story, and creating a troll-sized spectacle like you’ve never seen before.

‘I cannot wait for fans to experience the adventure we have in store.’

What’s more, cast members Kim Falck and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen are returning to play Andreas and Captain Kris, respectively, while Sara Khorami plays newcomer Marion.

Troll (2022) found itself in the top 10 in 93 countries, having stormed to the number one spot in Norway, the UK, and the US.

As for feedback, film critics gave Troll an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Paul Mount of Starburst writing: ‘A great piece of unassuming monster mayhem, a refreshingly Nordic take on tropes and cliches that Hollywood has mined to the point of exhaustion over the years.’

‘With a perfect run time, some superb visuals, and a throughline of some brilliant mythology, Troll deserves to be watched’, says Aaron Phillips of But Why Tho?

While audience comments are more mixed, as some wish for more ‘depth’ to the characters and a plot that isn’t so ‘generic’, the overall consensus is that it’s worth your time.
