Augsburg have parted ways with coach Sandro Wagner by mutual consent after five months over a poor start into the season, the Bundesliga club said on Monday.

The decision came after Saturday's 3-0 Bundesliga defeat at Hoffenheim which marked the ninth defeat from 14 matches under former Germany assistant coach Wagner.

"In discussions following the match in Hoffenheim, we realised that there is a lack of belief and conviction that we can turn things around in the current situation," managing director Michael Ströll said in a statement.

"For us, the well-being of FCA is always at the heart of every decision we make, and that is why we have come to this conclusion."

Wagner, 38, gave up the prestigious national team job and working at next year's World Cup to become a Bundesliga coach for the first time.

He and Augsburg started with big ambitions on a contract until 2028 on July 1 but Augsburg have managed only three Bundesliga victories from 12 matches and went out in the second round of the German Cup against second division Bochum.

"I have always approached my role at FCA with great energy and passion. We wanted to achieve a lot together, but unfortunately we were unable to do so in the short time available," Wagner said.

Sporting director Benni Weber added that Wagner has "initiated important processes in recent months.

"We are convinced of the path we have chosen and will continue to pursue it. Now it's time to gain stability and score points in the upcoming games."

Augsburg said that their former coach Manuel Baum will be caretaker for the remaining three games until the winter break, starting with Saturday's match against Bayer Leverkusen.
