It has been a decade since Peterborough United manager Luke Williams took on his first managerial role at Swindon Town.

He returns to his former club for an Vertu Trophy second-round tie on Tuesday, looking to bounce back from two successive League One defeats and continue his side's defence of the title.

"I have great memories from my time at Swindon and I really enjoyed my years there," Williams said.

"There are some really great people at the club so it is always nice to go back. I always enjoy returning but hopefully we go there and get the win.

"Everything you do in your career is an opportunity to learn and grow. It was incredible really, the amount of ups and downs we had. It was a brilliant experience for me."

Williams became caretaker manager at the County Ground in December 2015, following the departure of Martin Ling, and was then appointed full-time boss the following year.

The 44-year-old then left Swindon at the end of the 2016-17 season after the club's relegation to League Two.

Peterborough, who are aiming to win the competition for a third consecutive year, meet a Swindon side who are unbeaten in their past six League Two games and have already knocked League One side Rotherham United out of the FA Cup.

"I think it [the EFL Trophy] is a brilliant competition and it is starting to heat up. Swindon are a really good side who I think could probably compete in League One now as it stands," Williams said.

"They have the quality to play some good football but they aren't a soft touch either. We have to try and get the team selection right, we don't want to be disrespectful to the competition, and we want to win the game."
