By Matthew SchmidtShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberWhen the Las Vegas Raiders hired Pete Carroll as head coach over the winter, it was supposed to represent a major change in direction for the franchise. After all, Carroll experienced incredible success with the Seattle Seahawks, and if anyone could turn around the Raiders, most felt it would be him.
Well, now, Las Vegas looks even worse than it did before Carroll arrived.

The Raiders fell to 2-10 on the season with their blowout loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, which followed Carroll's decision to fire offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
Clearly, Kelly wasn't the problem, as Las Vegas managed just 156 yards of total offense in its Week 13 defeat.
So, what exactly does the future hold for Carroll? One NFL executive told Mike Sando of The Athletic that he expects the Raiders to move on this offseason.
..."The idea was, Pete was going to come in and make them a playoff team with a veteran quarterback," the exec said. "It will now be up to the GM to go through a head-coaching search, in my opinion."
Carroll convinced the Raiders to go out and acquire Geno Smith — who Carroll turned into a Pro Bowl quarterback in Seattle — to run the offense for 2025 and beyond, handing him a contract extension after landing him in a trade with the Seahawks.
The Smith move has proved to be an abject disaster, as Smith leads the NFL with 14 interceptions.
Basically every decision Carroll has made since taking the reins in Vegas has backfired. It's gotten so bad that the Raiders may regret not keeping Antonio Pierce, who actually did a better job than Carroll.

At 74 years old, this will almost certainly be Carroll's last stop as an NFL head coach, especially considering how poorly things have gone for the former Super Bowl champion.
Should the Raiders dismiss Carroll at season's end (and it's looking more and more like they will), we may see the end of him on NFL sidelines.
