Give me a lighthearted recap
Prime Video subscribers have quite the lineup going into December, and for the holiday season, I have come up with the perfect way to start the month. Prime Video's original movies usually break big on the platform, as seen by the recent worldwide success of Reacher star Alan Ritchson's Playdate. With that in mind, an original Christmas movie enters the list.
That said, Christmas is not all that Prime Video has to offer. In line with the lighter nature of the month, one of the best rom-coms of all time has joined the streaming service. It makes for the perfect double feature with our first choice, and an intriguing murder mystery promises to keep viewers guessing as the tone shifts to end the week.
3 Oh. What. Fun. (2025)
Releasing on Prime Video on December 3rd is the new original movie Oh. What. Fun. The film is led by Hollywood star Michelle Pfeiffer as Claire Clauster. She is in charge of all the holiday preparations, always organizing the best Christmas experiences for her chaotic family. However, when they go to an event and forget her at home, everything changes.
The movie follows Claire's hilarious trip across the country, as she wrestles with the meaning of Christmas and her life, while her family deals with their choices and treatment of her. With a star-studded cast that also includes names like Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dominic Sessa, Danielle Brooks, Denis Leary, and more, this is a fun holiday adventure.
2 Notting Hill (1999)
Keeping things light, Notting Hill is one of the best new additions to Prime Video this month. I consider Hugh Grant to be the best leading man in the rom-com genre. Sure, there are many other worthy candidates for that post. However, the actor just makes every character he plays extremely charming and impossible not to root for, like in this feel-good movie.
When that is put together with Julia Roberts' charismatic persona, we get Notting Hill, a showcase of what it means when one says "sparks fly." Grant will win everyone's heart as the bookstore owner who falls for a Hollywood star but has to wrestle with their completely different realities. The humor lands, the chemistry sizzles, and the story is earnest and heartwarming.
1 A Haunting in Venice (2023)
To end the list, the lighter tone makes way for a darker murder mystery that offers Prime Video subscribers a whole other set of emotions. With Netflix soon releasing the new chapter of its Knives Out franchise, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the timing is perfect for those looking into the genre to check out this exciting Agatha Christie adaptation.
A Haunting in Venice is the third and latest release in Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot movie franchise. This time, Poirot comes out of retirement to solve a mystery that adds supernatural elements to the franchise. The result is not a horror film, but a murder mystery that certainly plays into spookier territory, making it a thrilling watch on Prime Video.
