Michigan State has officially hired Pat Fitzgerald as it's next head football coach, replacing Jonathan Smith after two seasons in East Lansing, the Spartans X account released. With the hire becoming official, it is now time to digest the new era in East Lansing.

Excited about the upcoming opportunity, Fitzgerald shared his first official statement on the job in a press release released by the university.

"I am honored to be named the head football coach at Michigan State University," said Fitzgerald. "I'd like to thank President Guskiewicz and Athletics Director Batt for this opportunity. This is a program with a deep and storied tradition, a passionate fan base, and a commitment to excellence that extends far beyond the football field. What excited me most about this opportunity was the vision for what Michigan State can be for years to come. We will restore tradition, and I'm eager to earn the trust of our players, alumni, and fans while competing at the highest level."

While the hiring won't technically become university official until a Board of Trustees meeting on Friday, Dec. 12, Fitzgerald will be able to get to work on building his staff and beginning his roster management strategy.
