There haven't been many NFL games shown at the local pub in Mayobridge, Ireland. At least not until Charlie Smyth joined the New Orleans Saints. The second-year kicker got the starting nod in Sunday's game with the Miami Dolphins. While it took some time for the Saints offense to get into scoring position (and when they went for two points after scoring a touchdown rather than ask Smyth to kick an extra point, the new fans in Mayobridge booed them), he made sure it was worth the wait.
Smyth's very first career field goal was a tall task from 56 yards. And he nailed it, booming the kick through the uprights with at least ten more yards to spare. Back home, a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd including his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and other family was cheering him on. See for yourself:
How cool of a moment is that? It's a shame the Saints couldn't get him and his hometown fans a win, but they may have found something in the young kicker. It's at least a performance he can build off of going into Week 14's road game with the division-rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
