One of Warner Bros' new Harry Potter projects has cast the exact right person to play Lord Voldemort. Though the Harry Potter movies came to a close with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011, recent years have brought new waves of news about the franchise. Not only is there a TV remake of the original story in the works at HBO, but Warner Bros has a couple of other intriguing surprises rolling out as well.
In addition to the Harry Potter TV remake, Warner Bros is working on reformatting the original Sorcerer's Stone movie for Cosm Shared Reality theaters, which place patrons within a fully immersive dome for a 360-degree, virtual reality viewing experience. What's more, the original Harry Potter books have been adapted into a full-cast, unabridged audio production with Audible. Sorcerer's Stone was released in November 2025, and each subsequent book will be released monthly from there.
There are a variety of reasons to be excited about Warner Bros and Audible's shared Harry Potter project, including a truly exceptional cast. We've got Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Michelle Gomez as Minerva McGonagall, Kit Harington as Professor Lockhart, Keira Knightley as Professor Umbridge, and, perhaps most intriguingly, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort.
Matthew Macfadyen Is The Voice Of Voldemort In The New Harry Potter Audio Production
Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy looking at Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice
Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort is an absolute dream casting. This actor rose to prominence as Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, a role that demanded a nuanced blend of charm and coldness. Macfadyen went on to be known for a wide variety of projects, including The Assistant, Operation Mincemeat, and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Of course, in the case of the Harry Potter audio production, it's Macfadyen's voice that would be considered. It's a challenge to imagine anyone but Ralph Fiennes in the role, but Macfadyen has a similarly distinctive tone and cadence that are well-suited to calculating villains. Something else that is intriguing about this casting choice is that, unlike many of the others participating in the Harry Potter audio production, Macfadyen could easily play a physical version of Lord Voldemort as well.

Though the Harry Potter audio production and HBO's Harry Potter remake aren't directly linked, there is reason to believe they will share some casting choices. Arabella Stanton, who will play Hermione Granger in the TV remake, has also lent her voice to the character in the audio production.
HBO has been rather purposefully quiet about who will play Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter remake.
HBO has been rather purposefully quiet about who will play Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter remake. All the other major players have been announced, but the actor selected to portray the iconic villain has remained a secret. This would imply that whoever steps into the role is someone significant, and Macfadyen would certainly qualify, especially considering his existing involvement with the character. Only time will tell. Regardless, Macfadyen's performances in at least one version of Harry Potter are something to look forward to.
