2025 Athletics Season In Review: Angel PerdomoStory byConnor AshfordTue, December 2, 2025 at 1:41 AM UTC·4 min read

Today we take a quick look back at a reliever that didn’t make it into many games for the Athletics this past season. Four, if we’re being exact. Right-hander Angel Perdomo may not have made it into many contests for the 2025 A’s and that might be it for his tenure donning the Green & Gold.

How was he acquired?

The A’s claimed the right-handed Perdomo off waivers from the division-rival Los Angeles Angels on March 30th, just a few games into the regular season. He immediately joined the big league bullpen, taking the roster spot of former center fielder Esteury Ruiz, who was DFA’d himself to make room for Perdomo and would be on the move just a couple of days later. The addition of Perdomo put the nail in the coffin for Ruiz’s time with the A’s but they needed the arm.

What were the expectations?

When the A’s made the claim on Perdomo he had little big league experience under his belt. The 31-year-old had only made 52 career appearances in The Show and would soon undergo the dreaded Tommy John surgery just last year, costing him the entirety of the 2024 season. That said he’d consistently posted strong run-prevention numbers in the minors (career 3.29 ERA in 12 seasons) but was now on the older side of things and had never seen much sustained success in the majors. His best streak at the highest level of baseball came in 2023 right before his surgery. In 30 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates the Perdomo posted a decent 3.72 ERA. He was also racking up the punchouts during that stretch, collecting 40 K’s in just 29 innings in relief. The A’s were in a position to allow Perdomo some more time in the big leagues and with the way the bullpen performed last season they could afford to get looks at all these different arms, Perdomo’s included.

2025 Results

It only took a couple of days for Perdomo to make his A’s debut after joining the squad. His first outing was one to forget as he allowed two earned runs in a blowout loss to the Cubbies. Not the best way to introduce yourself to your new teammates but the righty would bounce back in his next few outings, allowing just one hit and a couple of walks.

That first outing seemed to be enough for the A’s to make another move though. He didn’t pitch much during his brief stint in the Green & Gold but got crunched out by the numbers anyway. Looking to make roster space for well-regarded right-handed pitching prospect JT Ginn the club elected to designate Perdomo for assignment on April 12th, after just 13 days with the big league team. It was a tough break for him as he was just used the previous day and the team needed another arm in the ’pen. He’d soon end up with the Aviators after going unclaimed. His time in Las Vegas did not go well as he got touched up for nine runs in just 14 2/3 frames. He’d ultimately make just 12 relief outings in Triple-A before getting shut down for the season, likely to help his recovery from TJ surgery he’d just had the year before.

2026 Outlook

Perdomo exercised his right to test free agency after the conclusion of the regular season. The right-hander remains on the open market as of this posting and could be an option for the Athletics again next year if they feel like he has more to offer. His time with the organization didn’t go as planned but the team could elect to give it another go with Perdomo, though he’s looking at a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training at best. He doesn’t have a huge ceiling but Perdomo could be a decent enough depth option for whoever he lands with, health permitting. Would you want to see him sign back for Round 2 with the A’s?
