The New York Yankees have multiple areas they need to address this offseason, and it is impossible for them to spend big on all of them.

On Monday, Yankees fans received a little bit of insight as to which position will not be a major priority. New York has holes in the rotation, bullpen, third base and outfield. Yankees insider Chris Kirschner is reporting that third base will be the position the Yankees choose not to spend big at the hot corner.

...

"It seems likelier the Yankees would get a platoon partner for (Ryan) McMahon at third base, trying to upgrade the offense that way rather than trading him," Kirschner wrote for The Athletic. "He is under contract for two more seasons at $16 million per year. It’s not the easiest contract to move, especially with McMahon being a glove-first player. Re-signing Amed Rosario to hit against lefties would make sense, if the Yankees want to pursue a reunion. Or, if they want to spend a bit more money, Kazuma Okamoto, who’s coming over from Japan, could also make sense."

Okamoto appears to be the best-case scenario for the Bronx Bombers at third base this offseason. ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel reported on Nov. 25 that Okamoto could sign for $43 million, including the posting fee, over a three-year period. That averages out to $14.33 million per year for the Yankees.

This certainly isn't the news Yankees fans want to hear as the winter meetings approach, but the truth is they were never going to spend $50 million per year for four positions this winter. Given that McMahon isn't necessarily a strong asset for a team to acquire, New York would more than likely have to retain some of his salary even if there was another team interested in acquiring him.

The Yankees are hopeful the lack of talent at third base isn't a major issue, and the rest of their lineup can cover for however they decide to build the platoon at the hot corner.
