Spaceballs 2 gets a major production update from Josh Gad. He is a co-writer, producer, and one of the stars of the long-awaited sequel to 1987's Spaceballs, which is widely considered to be among Mel Brooks' all-time best movies.
On Facebook, Gad confirmed that Spaceballs 2 has wrapped filming after going into production in September. He makes reference to the first film and to the quick turnaround, saying "It really was Ludicrous speed" as he reflects on the creative process and this important milestone. Check out the post below:
Gad reflects on how he contacted Brooks three years earlier about the project and was stunned that the acclaimed filmmaker agreed to it. Brooks returned to produce and star in the sequel. He directed, co-wrote, and produced the original movie, along with playing the wise Yogurt and villainous President Skroob.
Josh Greenbaum directs the sequel, with Gad calling him "one of the greatest directors I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing." He also thanks the entire crew, the other co-writers, Amazon MGM Studios, and the rest of Spaceballs 2's cast.
Returning alongside Brooks in the sequel are Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Rick Moranis, and George Wyner. They reprise their original roles, with Pullman as Lone Starr, Zuniga as Queen Vespa, Moranis as Dark Helmet, and Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. Since Rick Moranis stopped acting in movies decades ago, his return is particularly momentous.
Newcomers who joined the cast with Gad and who he mentions in his post include Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and Bill Pullman's son, Lewis Pullman. Fittingly, the younger Pullman will play Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Queen Vespa in the sequel.
Considering the decades of science-fiction films and television shows that have been released since 1987, there are plenty of storylines and characters ripe for parody in Spaceballs 2. This includes the Star Wars prequel trilogy, along with the movies and series that have come out since Disney bought Lucasfilm. Star Trek, Avatar, Dune, The Matrix, Alien, and Predator are among the other popular sci-fi franchises that could be parodied this time.
Spaceballs 2 is slated to be released in 2027, although it does not have an exact release date yet. With filming having wrapped before the end of 2025, it can be in post-production for more than a year and still meet its 2027 release window. In the meantime, speculation will continue about which franchises, stories, and characters will be parodied in the sequel.
