Before Bayern Munich appointed Vincent Kompany as their head coach in 2024, club executives spoke with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who encouraged them to hire the former Belgium international.

As Bayern supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß recently revealed, Guardiola even said he trusts Kompany to be his future successor at Manchester City.

Kompany was asked about this during a press conference on Tuesday, but stressed he doesn't want to look too far ahead.

“I've often said: I'm not here to comment on Uli Hoeneß' statements. I have huge respect for him. But in football, I can’t think that far ahead. My focus is on Bayern and what we can achieve now,” Kompany said.

“I like to live in the world in front of me right now – that takes up all my time. I have zero thoughts about other teams; I only see FC Bayern.”

Currently, the main focus for Kompany is Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal round of 16 clash against 1. FC Union Berlin, with whom Bayern drew 2-2 after scoring a late equaliser in the Bundesliga on November 8.

“We can do again what we showed in the last five minutes against Union. That’s what we did against St. Pauli (on Saturday when Bayern won 3-1 after scoring two late goals, editor's note)," said Kompany.

"It’s a knockout game against a physically strong team, and Union will hope for their moment,” he added.
