What do you get if you combine Minecraft with Dark Souls? It's an odd question, given the two games couldn't really be further from one another in terms of overall vibe. But it turns out mushing them together creates something genuinely interesting.
Dark Craft is a brand-new open-world RPG that promises to be the "first MMORPG soulslike", which is certainly a bold thing to proclaim. It's also set to be a completely free-to-play experience.
Dark Craft Is A New, Free RPG
No release date yet
Developer and publisher Take Top Entertainment are aiming to build a vast open world that you can explore alone or with friends. You'll also have the chance to hunt bosses, join up with guilds, and even fight other players.
"Dark Craft is a free-to-play MMO set in a grim dark-fantasy world, where a vast open world and a Souls-style combat system turn every encounter into a true challenge. The world is filled with secrets and dangers: monsters are ruthless, and other players can become either allies or enemies. Explore the lands, discover rare artifacts, and fight alone or with a group — in Dark Craft, your path is defined by your choices and your ability to endure in a harsh world."
The release date has yet to be announced, and there's no gameplay trailer just yet. While the reveal trailer is undeniably stunning, it's always worth waiting until gameplay is released to see if ambition and execution are able to match up. We've been burned before, after all, by games like The Day Before and MindsEye, two massively hyped-up games you'd probably forgotten about until I mentioned them just now.
A Soulslike MMORPG
It's not been done before
I'd argue that soulslikes and MMORPGs are inherently different genres, so it'll be interesting to see how the two come together. I guess the closest we've got in recent years is Elden Ring: Nightreign, but that's really not an MMORPG.
Personally, I'm a sucker for the visual style Dark Craft seems to be going for. A gothic Minecraft with all the decaying horror vibes of Dark Souls is an easy win in my eyes. Some might argue it just looks like a modded Minecraft server. I would ask why on Earth we should see that as a bad thing.
