The Yankees recently lost Devin Williams to the New York Mets as the star closer reportedly agreed to a deal with the Mets this week. The Yankees can't afford to lose their other free agents, including Cody Bellinger, this offseason.
Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com recently predicted the Yankees would retain Bellinger in free agency "because their winter plan is dramatically altered without the lefty-hitting outfielder, with few clear replacement options -- unless they're going all out for Kyle Tucker." Bellinger is projected to sign a monster $168 million deal, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
...The Yankees need to re-sign or replace Bellinger this winter. There's a chance they could go after Kyle Tucker as a huge free agent signing, but Bellinger makes more sense.
Bellinger would be about half the price of Tucker, which is why he'd make more sense for the Yankees. This would allow the Yankees to go after a few bullpen arms and an infielder. The additional cap flexibility the Yankees would have by signing Bellinger instead of Tucker would be well worth it in the near future.
