The New York Mets made their first big splash of free agency when they reportedly agreed to a deal with former All-Star reliever Devin Williams. Williams is coming off a down year, but in the right situation, he could get back to his dominance. The Mets are betting that he's going to return to his former self over the next three seasons.
Now the Mets need to dive back into free agency in order to add more support to their roster.
Andrew Tredinnick of NorthJersey.com recently predicted the Mets would re-sign star closer Edwin Diaz after reportedly agreeing to a deal with Williams. Diaz is projected to sign a huge $88 million deal this winter, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
..."It’s difficult to imagine a ninth inning at Citi Field without the trumpets," Tredinnick wrote.
Williams is a good addition to the bullpen, but the Mets likely don't want him to be their closer. He showed some kinks in the armor last season that will likely scare the Mets away from putting him in this role right away.
As a result, a new deal with Diaz would make a lot of sense.
Diaz has been a star in New York for years. He's likely headed for a huge contract, as Bowden projects, but that's something the Mets can afford. They missed the postseason this year, and the front office is likely going to go to extreme lengths to avoid this same disappointment next season.
