The Avengers may be Marvel's greatest heroes, but not all of them are particularly nice people. Indeed, the hero team's ranks include some characters so terrifying, even other heroes are prepared to admit they're scared of them, despite being on the same side...

5 Wolverine, aka Logan, aka James Howlett

It's easy to see why someone would be scared of Wolverine. He's a growling antihero who's been killing people for more than a century, and has six unbelievably sharp claws that he uses to cut people to ribbons. He's also prone to 'berserker rages' that cause him to be overcome with rage, losing the ability to tell between friend and foe.

Even Doctor Strange is scared of Logan, admitting he's the "scariest man" he's ever met, including Mephisto himself. It's understandable that Marvel's heroes are scared of Logan, as he's killed several of them. In the 'Enemy of the State' arc, Logan was brainwashed into trying to kill heroes including the Fantastic Four and Daredevil, and did kill fellow X-Man Northstar.

4 Avenger X, aka Cressida

After being empowered by the cosmic being known as the Stranger, Cressida joined the Avengers with the unique ability to enhance their powers. However, the team eventually learned she was essentially an energy vampire who killed others by stealing their lifeforce. While she could make the other Avengers more powerful, it came at the expense of innocent lives.

Cressida killed dozens of people as an Avenger, before ultimately becoming a direct threat to the team. The heroes are understandably wary of a villain who can steal their lifeforce (and gain their powers in the process), but are even more scared of an 'ally' who will kill others in their name.

Despite being a founding Avenger, the Hulk has never gotten much love from the team. Utterly gigantic, essentially unbeatable and powered by pure rage, Hulk is a hugely intimidating physical presence - even to heroes like Laura Kinney's Wolverine, who can hypothetically heal from whatever damage he does.

2 White Tiger, aka Ava Ayala

Ava Ayala is different to every other hero on this list. That's because the fear she invites isn't a reaction to her behavior, but an aspect of her powers. Ava is bonded to the Tiger God - the primordial embodiment of human fear.

While the Tiger God empowers its avatar with an enhanced physique and heightened senses, Ava has a particularly strong bond with the deity, and can channel it to inspire fear in anyone and everyone around her - including her fellow Avengers. That's what happened when Ava began hunting Gideon Mace - the villain who killed her parents - and her fellow heroes tried to stop her taking his life.

1 The Sentry, aka Bob Reynolds

The Sentry's power is only matched by his instability, with Bob Reynolds often switching between the Sentry persona and that of the destructive Void. While the Sentry is one of the most powerful Avengers to ever exist, the darkness locked away inside him causes other heroes to see him as a bomb that could explode at any moment, and take the entire planet with him.

The fear the other Avengers have for Sentry is justified, as he's been turned against the team several times. During the Dark Reign, Norman Osborn turned Sentry into his personal enforcer, killing fellow Avenger Ares. And once he was resurrected using the Celestial Death Seed, Sentry became all-out nightmare fuel, tearing his own head to pieces just to mess with the Wasp.
