Step Up stars Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan met on set in 2006 before getting married in 2009, but like many Hollywood romances, the spark died, and the two filed for divorce in 2018. Now, the settlement between the actors has been revealed, and one of the main reasons the divorce took six years to complete was Tatum’s earnings from the Magic Mike franchise.
In a court filing from November 26, Tatum and Dewan will receive 50% of each other’s retirement benefits earned during the marriage, determined under the Screen Actors Guild-Producers Pension Plan for Motion Picture Actors. This is calculated by dividing the pension credit earned during the marriage by the total credits earned during their careers.
Tatum and Dewan have kept their divorce settlement private; they share a 12-year-old daughter named Everly, and while they both waived spousal support, they have agreed to work out any future custody issues privately with a judge, in documents obtained by E! News.
Tatum hasn’t been single for long following his separation from Dewan, and most recently debuted a relationship with Australian-French model Inka Williams this year after his failed engagement to Zoë Kravitz.
Dewan filed a petition seeking a portion of her ex’s profits in April 2024, and more specifically, her attorneys alleged that property acquired during their marriage includes Magic Mike.
The franchise began in 2012 with the release of the film, which stars Tatum alongside Alex Pettyfer and Olivia Munn. There are now two more films in the franchise, a Las Vegas stage show, a London stage musical, and a reality TV competition titled Finding Magic Mike. Tatum stated he drew inspiration from his own experience as an 18-year-old stripper in Florida.
The franchise could be worth at least $125 million from just the live shows, and the movie series has grossed over $351 million worldwide at the box office collectively. However, Dewan’s attorneys stated that the entire franchise is a "potential billion-dollar asset". Tatum denied the accusations and stated:
"I have never denied Petitioner her share of any community assets or income. I have always agreed for Petitioner to have an interest in the Magic Mike intellectual property and related entities."
Since the proceedings have taken place, the actors and former spouses are on relatively good terms as of September, when Tatum told Variety that "Jenna and I are good now, but it was a painful break to have that fall apart, especially being so young."
