DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A came far faster than anyone expected, but Game Freak has added a new promotion that's free for everyone to participate in, even if you aren't joining in on the expansion adventure.
To pick up the Legendary Mewtwo, which dates back all the way to the original generation of Pokémon, you'll need to pick up a special mystery gift and embark upon a short questline. As a bonus, Mewtwo comes with two extra Mega Evolutions.
How To Start The Project M Side Mission
Use The Mystery Gift Feature
First, you're going to need to download the Project M mystery gift, which includes the Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y stones that are required to start the questline. Head to the Link Play option on the main menu, then select Mystery Gift.
Select "get gift from the internet," then select Project M to receive the reward. After you get the stones, the Project M Side Mission will unlock after you've rolled credits for Pokémon Legends: Z-A's main story. To actually capture Mewtwo, you'll need to locate it first.
How To Find & Capture Mewtwo
You Can Locate Them In The Lab Under Lysandre Café
Don't worry if the side mission never pops, as you can start it any time after getting the Mewtwo stones. To locate Mewtwo, you'll need to go to the labs underneath Lysandre Café. Fast travel to Lysandre Café in Magenta Sector 2, then enter it, and go through the door in the back.
If you want to explore the lab with the teleporters, you can, but if you're going to head straight to Mewtwo, enter the elevator in front of you and select the B3F floor. Veer right into an open room, and release the locks for Project M, which will unleash Mewtwo.
Before you start the Mewtwo quest, make sure you load up on Ultra Balls at a local Pokémon Center. It took us roughly 20 to catch it across multiple battles.
Here, you'll be tasked with battling and capturing Mewtwo. For reference, Mewtwo is a level 70 Psychic Pokémon with the following moves:
- Psychic
- Aura Sphere
- Amnesia
- Psycho Cut
Mewtwo's weaknesses include ghost, bug, and dark types. It is strong against fighting and psychic types. Since you've cleared the game, you should have a party capable of handling Mewtwo with no issues.
The main thing to remember is that Mewtwo needs to be captured, not defeated. Use Ultra Balls or any ball to claim it. The best strategy is to throw some balls right away, wait for them to rest, then try to capture them again when they're vulnerable to captures. If that doesn't work, defeat it, try one last time to capture it, then repeat the process.
If you knock Mewtwo out without capturing it, the game will let you try it again immediately afterward, like nothing ever happened. It is seemingly impossible to miss out on capturing Mewtwo, so even if you have to leave the lab and come back, you can still get more attempts in.
To Mega Evolve Mewtwo, all you need to do is equip it with the X or Y Mewtwonite stones. Forget what Mable says after the battle: all you need to do is Mega Evolve them in battle just like any other Pokémon, once your evolution meter is full.
Mewtwo will bring the total Z-A Pokedex up to 231, from 230. Note that it is Shiny locked.
As Pokémon Legends: Z-A expands its roster beyond its initial offerings, the city of Lumiose is slowly getting a bit bigger. Having Mewtwo inked to a small quest was a good worldbuilding decision and adds a bit of lore to the event.
