The ACC/SEC challenge returns to Tallahassee on Tuesday night as Florida State (5-2, 0-0) welcomes Georgia (7-1, 0-0) for the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The Bulldogs are currently ranked 37th by KenPom and 36th in the NET. Florida State is currently a 1.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel.
Last time out for FSU, the Seminoles faced their worst loss of the season, getting crushed by Texas A&M 95-59 in a neutral-site game in Tampa. While Luke Loucks’ program turnaround was never expected to occur in one season, it was a bucket of cold water thrown on what has been an impressive start to the ‘Nole season. However, the talent gap between the two sides, driven by the schools’ financial investments, could be a recurring theme for the remainder of the season.

UGA has lost only one game all year, a neutral-site overtime defeat to Clemson, and is coming off a 42-point drubbing of Tennessee Tech, in which it scored 123 points.

Notes to know:
While this is not a statistic, it will be imperative to see a response from Florida State after its blowout loss last Friday. Loucks is instilling a culture in Tallahassee, and difficult losses can be a turning point for better or worse. Florida State does not have to win to respond to a difficult loss, but seeing its body language will go a long way towards forecasting what type of season FSU will have.
On a grander level, the ACC/SEC challenge will be a measuring stick for what type of offseason overhaul the ACC accomplished after one of the worst seasons in conference history a year ago. The ACC hired four new coaches last offseason in the hope of raising its ceiling and regaining past glory on the hardwood. While early in the year, that change has yet to occur, as the ACC has only three ranked teams right now, two of them are Duke and North Carolina, compared to seven in the SEC. But the ACC will have plenty of opportunity to boost its resume with Duke playing Florida, Clemson going on the road to Alabama, and Will Wade’s NC State taking on Auburn, to name a few notable matchups.

Players to know:
G Jeremiah Wilkinson: If this name sounds familiar, it should, as Wilkinson won the ACC Sixth Man of the Year award last season at Cal. Last season, against FSU, Wilkinson led the Golden Bears with 18 points in a 77-68 win. This season with UGA, the sophomore has stepped into a starting role and is one of the team’s leading scorers, averaging 16.5 points per game on 46%/35%/77% shooting.
G Blue Cain: Cain is one of the last men standing in college basketball without transferring, as the junior guard begins his third season in Athens. After playing mostly off the bench as a freshman, Cain started 33 games a season ago and every game for the Bulldogs this season. This year, Cain is averaging 15.2 points per game, second to Wilkinson on 50% shooting.
