Previous Page Next PageThe end of Todd Grimshaw’s (Gareth Pierce) domestic violence nightmare may be in sight in Coronation Street as Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) struggles to keep his rage behind closed doors. Will somebody finally come to his rescue?
Theo is a bad guy, and actor James Cartwright would be the first to agree. ‘I think we always knew he was a complicated man.’ He admits. ‘But now, as we move further along, you start to see that actually he’s not just a complicated man, he’s potentially a very dangerous man. The flaws and the damage within him are now manifesting in a way that I’m not sure even he can control. And I think it’s potentially putting people at risk.’
He’s not wrong. Ever since the scowling scaffolder swaggered his way onto Coronation Street, Theo has raised a lot of red flags. His cheating and inability to accept his own sexuality cost him his wife and child, something that he has taken out on Todd in their toxic relationship.
‘He’s made Todd the scapegoat for all the things that have gone wrong in his life since he met him.’ James explains. ‘In the space of 10 months, he’s been through more than a lot do in 10 years, he’s got divorced, lost his children, his business has failed and these are enormous life events.
‘The person he’s decided he can hold responsible for all this is Todd as he left what appeared to be this wonderful life to be with Todd. So then when it’s all gone wrong, he’s turned around and decided this is your fault.’

Viewers have how far how far Theo is prepared to go to ‘punish’ Todd. Theo has body shamed Todd and undermine his confidence by using ‘marathon training’ under the guise of caring about his health. In reality, it’s a manipulative way of controlling where he goes, who he sees and ‘proving’ his affection.
He’s dumped milk over Todd’s head, he’s tried to isolate him from his friends like Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien). Most terrifying of all, he smashed Todd’s face into a mirror in shocking scenes and forced Todd to lie about his injuries to anyone who asked.
Why does Theo hurt Todd? James Cartwright sheds some light on his mental state. ‘He’s not a psychopath, he’s a narcissist. He does these things in that moment of rage and then the cycle of self-hatred starts, where he loathes himself, he starts drinking, and then the cycle continues again.’

But in upcoming episodes, Theo may have finally gone too far.
When Gary (Mikey North) tells George (Tony Maudsley) and Christina that he heard a crash coming from Todd and Theo’s flat, they’re immediately concerned.
