Should Michigan fans start to recalibrate their expectations for the football team after two consecutive seasons of not reaching the College Football Playoff or Big Ten Championship Game?

In this edition of SB Nation Reacts, we’re asking what expectations should be for Michigan Football moving forward. Vote below.

Michigan won the Big Ten Championship in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and made the College Football Playoff from 21-23 as well, culminating in a 15-0 2023 season and a national championship. However, the Sherrone Moore era at Michigan is still trying to find its footing. Michigan finished 8-5 last season and is currently 9-3 this year with a bowl game to go.

Moore thinks 10 wins would be an accomplishment for Michigan; however, most fans likely disagree. They expect Michigan to make the playoffs at the same rate as Ohio State.

“We gotta regroup and try to get ten wins. That’ll be huge,” Moore said. “That’ll be a huge success for this team to get ten wins with such a young team.”

Moore may think ten wins is a “huge success” because Michigan has a young team, but if a team is measured by championships and beating its rivals, this season was not a huge success. Michigan won’t be competing for championships, and they didn’t beat rival Ohio State. However, Michigan can finish strong with a bowl win, and ending the season with ten wins would show the team had pride and didn’t make them want to quit after ending the regular season with a 27-9 loss to Ohio State.

Moving forward, though, expectations for the team should continue to be heightened in the age of NIL. If Ohio State can get back to the playoffs every year, why can’t Michigan? Now that would be a huge success. Michigan did it from 21-23, and now they have to prove they can do it again, and then once they do it, sustain it.
