By Jack RoystonShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberMeghan Markle makes personalized advent calendars for her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, containing handwritten notes to them, her new Netflix special has revealed.
The Duchess of Sussex reads out two of the messages during With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, her cooking show's festive special, saying: "I love you because you're so kind," and "I love you because you're so brave."
Meghan placed the folded paper inside a pouch in a reusable advent calendar alongside small presents in gift boxes.
...Why It Matters
Meghan has made her relationship with her children a key part of her show, but has always been careful about how much to include them and how much to protect their privacy.
She never shows their faces, after Prince Harry spent his life being recognized everywhere he goes, but does include snippets about them nonetheless. She also sometimes posts photos and clips of the backs of their heads, with their faces obscured.
What To Know
"I love the idea of an advent calendar, so I wanted to do it for my own kids," Meghan said during the holiday special. "You can get small ones that just have a small chocolate each day, you can get them pre-made and all it's really about is having a surprise and delight every single day for 24 days until you get to Christmas. But they're not supposed to be big things, they're supposed to be small gestures.
"I'm writing 'I love you because you're so kind,' and 'I love you because you're so brave.'"
With Love, Meghan debuted its first season in March, with actor Mindy Kaling and Meghan's former Suits co-star Abigail Spencer among the star guests.
Season 1 got scathing reviews, including from outlets that were broadly positive about Meghan's exit from the royal family, creating speculation in the media that Meghan and Harry would lose their Netflix deal.
That proved wide of the mark and the couple signed with Netflix again over the summer, but on less favorable terms via a "first-look deal," which gives the streamer first refusal on any ideas they pitch, but not full exclusivity.
What People Are Saying
Meghan Markle described the handwritten notes as: "Little findings, trying to really embrace and lean into making every day of that month special as you're wrapping up a year.
"But don't feel like you have to do it all. Just embrace the special touches that bring you joy. Hopefully, we'll have these for quite a long time. A tradition has to have a beginning."
What Happens Next
With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration was released by Netflix on December 3 and comes off the back of two seasons of the show that were released earlier in the year. Only time will tell whether Meghan gets a third season of the show.
