AFCON 2025: Gernot Rohr unveils a risk-free preparation plan

As the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) approaches, Gernot Rohr is leaving nothing to chance. The head coach of Benin’s Cheetahs has announced that he will travel to Morocco with 30 players, aiming to avoid any surprises and approach the tournament with a competitive, fully prepared squad.

A tailored preparation to counter the unexpected

Rohr explained the reasoning behind this strategic decision:

CAF covers expenses for 28 players starting December 18, while the ministry’s budget supports 25 players. That’s why we’ve put together a preliminary list of 50, from which we’ll select the final squad.

To navigate these logistical constraints, the staff has selected 30 players for the training camp in Ben Slimane, scheduled to begin on December 10. However, two or three players remain uncertain, which could naturally reduce the squad before the final deadline.

Securing a strong group ahead of kickoff

Gernot Rohr wants to guard against potential injuries during the last club matches:

We want to be sure to have at least 26 or 27 players ready for AFCON. For the first match, five players will be left off the team sheet, so every squad member could prove valuable.

This approach will give the team flexibility and ensure optimal cohesion before entering the competition. The Cheetahs will face a particularly tough group alongside Senegal, DR Congo, and Botswana.
