In need of depth after losing starting defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt to a season-ending ankle injury, the Green Bay Packers signed defensive lineman Jordon Riley off the practice squad of the New York Giants on Wednesday, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

The Packers had an open roster spot after releasing receiver Will Sheppard on Tuesday.

Riley, a seventh-round pick of the Giants in the 2023 draft, played in 21 career games and made five starts while with the Giants. He produced 20 tackles, four tackles for loss and a quarterback hit over 383 defensive snaps. According to Pro Football Focus, Riley has two career quarterback pressures (one hit, one hurry) and 12 total stops, or tackles creating a failure for the offense.

The 27-year-old played in 44 career collegiate games while attending four different schools: North Carolina, Garden City Community College, Nebraska and finally Oregon.

Despite playing in 13 games last season, Riley has been on the Giants practice squad all season.

While he has elite size at 6-5 and 325 pounds, Riley tested out as a poor athlete coming out of Oregon in 2023, with a final Relative Athletic Score of 2.8 due to poor scores in the jumps, 40-yard dash and agility tests.

At PFF, Riley received poor grades in run defense and tackling during both of his seasons with the Giants.

Why did the Packers make this move?

Depth was required at defensive tackle after losing Wyatt, who injured his ankle on the final defense play of the Packers' win over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. He will miss the rest of the season. Without Wyatt, the Packers were down to Karl Brooks, Colby Wooden and rookies Warren Brinson and Nazir Stackhouse on the inside of the defensive front. Brooks is battling an ankle injury, while Brinson and Stackhouse lack experience. In Riley, the Packers are getting a big body with some experience playing at the NFL level.
