St. Denis Medical revealed a bombshell secret about naive nurse Matt Pearson's past, and it could have long-term consequences for the mockumentary sitcom's first great romance.
During St. Denis Medical season 2 episode 6, "I Left a Woman on the Table," Matt (Mekki Leeper) was shocked when his ex-wife, Violet (Jessica Lowe), arrived at St. Denis to try to win him back. Because they came from a sheltered community that didn't believe in medical science, he had to convince her to stay at the hospital to have surgery for her very serious gallbladder infection.
Matt's desire to become a nurse was part of the reason that he and Violet broke up. Their community's rejection of medical science was in direct contrast to Matt's career goal. When Matt became a nurse at St. Denis Medical, he quickly developed a major crush on Nurse Serena Jung (Kahyum Kim), who's much more worldly than him.
Serena was floored to discover that Matt had an ex-wife. This was because, at the end of St. Denis Medical season 1, Nurse Val (Kaliko Kauahi) and Dr. Bruce Schweitz (Josh Lawson) had told Serena that Matt had feelings for her, which surprised her.
When Matt found out that Serena knew about his crush, he requested to work in a different hospital zone so that he could avoid her. When she confronted him about it, he apologized, but he also confessed that their time apart helped him to get over his crush on her.
Although Serena didn't reciprocate Matt's feelings at first, there have been a few hints that she's starting to find the idea of being in a relationship with him intriguing. Their relationship has been the sitcom's only will-they-or-won't-they storyline so far, and it's been interesting to see the tables turn as Matt has moved on from having feelings for Serena, but she's starting to notice him more, perhaps as more than a friend. Now, the revelation that Matt has an ex-wife could be the catalyst that jumpstarts their relationship.
Matt’s Ex-Wife Reveal In St. Denis Medical Proved He Wasn’t As Innocent As Serena Thought

When Matt was trying to convince Violet to stay at the hospital for medical care despite her beliefs, he pretended to have feelings for her so that she wouldn't leave. However, when Serena informed Violet that Matt was trying to keep her at the hospital for medical treatment because he cared about her, but he didn't have feelings for her anymore, Violet wanted him to prove that the relationship was really over.
Violet asked Matt to kiss her to convince her that he no longer had feelings for her. Serena and Dr. Ron Leonard (David Alan Grier) witnessed the kiss, and they were shocked by how passionate it was. Matt later told Serena that he held back on the kiss, only giving Violet 25 percent of the "Matt magic," which made Serena laugh and say, "Okay, player." Serena then saw Matt in a new light, and the revelation that he'd been married before proved to her that he wasn't an innocent bumpkin with no real relationship experience.
Why Serena Was Intrigued By Seeing Matt Kiss Violet In St. Denis Medical

Serena has always thought of Matt as a good friend. Although their friendship was awkward after she found out about his crush, they reconnected during St. Denis Medical episode 5, "A Cup of Strong Coffee," when they worked together to diagnose a patient. Ever since Serena found out about Matt's crush on her, she sometimes looks at him as though she's wondering what it might be like to be in a relationship with him.
However, having a front-row seat to Matt's kiss with Violet forced Serena to think of Matt in a romantic way. She didn't have to imagine what it would be like to kiss him because she saw it firsthand. This was most likely the first time that Serena thought of Matt as a sexy, take-charge man because she'd never seen that side of his personality before, and it seemed to have sparked something inside of her.
St. Denis Medical Hints That Serena Will Probably Pursue Matt Now

Like many sitcoms before it, St. Denis Medical will now most likely turn the tables on the Matt and Serena romance, and have her pining for him. Serena genuinely didn't seem to realize that Matt had feelings for her at first, so she never thought of him as a romantic prospect. However, now that she's seen firsthand what kind of lover Matt might be, she might start to think of him as more than a friend.
St. Denis Medical has done a fantastic job with Matt and Serena's slow-burn relationship by establishing them as friends first. Whether or not they move from friends to something more, they're one of the cutest couples on television. Although they're an unlikely pairing, their opposite personalities mesh so well together. Hopefully, the revelation about Matt's ex-wife will lead to Matt and Serena becoming St. Denis' Medical's first great romance.
St. Denis Medical airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
