By Anna SkinnerShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) announced a delayed start for all of its 45 schools on Thursday amid concerns of flooding rain.
The announcement comes as hundreds of schools have cancelled or delayed class this week amid winter storms and heavy snow. Many of the impacted schools were in the Northeast or Midwest, and more schools could announce closings or delays on Thursday morning amid cold temperatures and more snow.
The LPSS will be delaying its start times by 90 minutes on Thursday morning for all 45 schools because of rain. All of LPSS' more than 31,000 students will be impacted. Bus routes will also run 90 minutes later than normal.
Newsweek reached out to LPSS after hours on Wednesday night by phone for comment.
..."Your safety is always our first priority. After working closely with the National Weather Service and local meteorologists, we are adjusting Thursday’s schedule to keep our students, staff, and bus drivers safe during expected early-morning rain," LPSS posted on Facebook. "All LPSS schools will operate on a 90-minute delayed start tomorrow. While severe weather is not anticipated, isolated flash flooding is possible and we want everyone to have a safer, calmer start to the day."

When LPSS posted the delay on Facebook, many parents responded with concerns about how they would get their children to school, since they had to go to work.
"This is stupid. Just close school for the day…not everyone can drop off at those times!!!" one person commented.
"Just close down the schools my kid won't even be able to make it to the bus and now that's another absence for absolutely no reason," another person said.
As of Wednesday night, no rain-related weather alerts were in place for Louisiana, where LPSS is located. However, the NWS office in Lake Charles, which is the forecast region for Lafayette, warned of incoming rain in a post on X.
"A low pressure system will develop along the Texas coast today and move to near the Florida panhandle by Friday," NWS Lake Charles posted. "Rain will move into the region late this evening with the heaviest rain expected Thursday into early Friday. Light showers will be possible into Saturday."
