Bayern took advantage of a couple own goals to defeat Union Berlin at their home stadium. Two corner kicks from Joshua Kimmich led to first half goals in Bayern’s favor.
It was not the prettiest win for the Rekordmeister but it will satisfy the German national team captain.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement“I’m not sure when was the last time we advanced to this stage,” said Kimmich (via @iMiaSanMia). “It felt like we were always out by November or December in the past 5-6 years. So it was very important that we advanced today. The goal is to go to Berlin for the final and we’re working towards that.”
It is weird that Bayern annually competes for the Champions League title but has struggled to reach the later stages of the DFB-Pokal.
Kimmich added, “We played some good football in the first half today, but the second half was more of a fight and we didn’t manage to play our game – it’s difficult to string 2-3 passes together on this pitch. Union played a lot of long balls and there were a lot of duels. I think it was not an attractive half to watch for neutrals. I’m happy we defended well and scored from set pieces this time. The Pokal final is one of the most emotional games I’ve experienced in my career, the atmosphere is outstanding. It’s still a bit far away, but our goal is to be there.”
Bayern has not lifted the DFB-Pokal trophy since the 2019/20 sextuple season under Hansi Flick.
