Quite possibly the greatest goalkeeper of all time announced his departure from the German national team in 2014. It was Manuel Neuer, alongside Thomas Müller and Toni Kroos who retired from Die Mannschaft as former or current Bayern Munich players after an unceremonious exit at the 2024 EUROs in Germany.

Fast forward to today, and one of those players has been continuously asked about a potential return to German’s net. The sweeper keeper was poised to be replaced by Marc-Andrew ter Stegen, but after a major injury setback, the position is once again seemingly Neuer’s, if he so wants it. However, once again, Neuer has denied any interest in returning to the national team.

“I’m focused on the club and want to bring my performances here, and that is crucial for me because we can achieve so much here with the team,” Neuer told Sky Germany (as captured via @iMiaSanMia).

It seems like a closed case at this point. Even an injury to someone like Oliver Baumann is hardly likely to tempt Manuel Neuer as he has stood firm on his decision with no hesitation based on his responses. Or perhaps Neuer is playing it cool and allowing himself time to analyze Germany’s position and join last minute before the World Cup?

If we are looking at similar examples, Kroos only announces his return to the national team just four months before the EUROs, so the door is by no means shut. Baumann has done more than enough to prove himself but if Neuer comes knocking, will Nagelsmann open the door?
