No Crunchyroll anime is bigger than Gachiakuta at the moment. At a time when huge anime like My Hero Academia are in their final season, and massive hits like One Piece are still churning out episodes, a new series like Gachiakuta claiming Crunchyroll's top spot for so many weeks is a huge achievement.
To celebrate the anime's incredible success, ScreenRant spoke to Gachiakuta's lead English voice actors, Bryson Baugus and Christopher Wehkamp. When asked about the anime's runaway success, Rudo's voice actor had some keen insights.
I think for very first impressions what a lot of people notice is that it's just got such a very unique art style. I don't think there's any anime that looks like it out there right now. And I think that first intrigue, that first little bit of this looks a little bit weird.
So then they watch that first episode, and they see just how unique this world is. They see how well-written the characters are, the mysteries that it brings up and all of that different stuff. I think it does a really good job of balancing. Not just being style, but having that substance there to back it up, if that makes sense.
Gachiakuta is the Perfect Marriage Of Style and Substance
Gachiakuta-Anime-Key-Visual
Adapted from Kei Urana's manga of the same name, Gachiakuta is the latest shonen sensation. The series follows a young man named Rudo who is thrown down into a world of trash where people called Givers wield items with special abilities.
Gachiakuta is currently Crunchyroll's #1 most popular anime, and part of that is undeniably its striking look.
Kei Urana's manga is already visually impressive, carrying a suitably gritty look that complements the anime's trash and punk rock themeing.
Studio Bones' anime adaptation only enhances Urana's exceptional artwork. The result easily ranks among Studio Bones' best-looking anime series.
More than just a pretty-looking series, however, Gachiakuta tackles serious subject matter with aplomb. The series tackles themes of class inequality and prejudice with the kind of deft hand that is rare to see.
Gachiakuta Could Be The Next Demon Slayer-Level Mega Hit
Given Gachiakuta's similarities to past hits like Naruto and Chainsaw Man, there is a distinct possibility that it could become Crunchyroll's next big series.
Though that might seem unlikely given that the series has a much grimier and cruder sensibility than the slick aesthetic of Demon Slayer and other huge anime like it, the fact that Gachiakuta has spent so long at Crunchyroll's #1 spot shows anime fans clearly enjoy what they're seeing.
The real test will be how Gachiakuta is perceived among more casual anime fans and whether it will be able to convert people to the fandom. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle might be the first $1 billion anime movie because its appeal is so wide.
While some might be skeptical that Gachiakuta could reach such heights, it's more likely than initial appearances suggest. Gachiakuta is visually stunning, and its raw, angry core could make it appealing to a generation feeling creeping anger and anxiety over world events.
Gachiakuta has all the makings of Crunchyroll's next marquee anime, and it represents a bright future for the industry.
