This Skyrim expansion is going to give you yet another reason to dive in for another playthrough, and it's proof we don't need TES6 yet.

While it will be a long time before players actually get their hands on The Elder Scrolls 6, you'd be surprised at what The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim still has to offer players after over 15 years since the game's launch. The Skyrim modding community has more or less kept the game alive, providing players essential new content to keep them busy while they wait for TES6.

Fans will definitely want to check out this brand-new Skyrim mod, The Heart of Winterroot (via Nexus Mods), that adds a "fully voiced" questline "featuring new dungeons, characters, and a nature-driven story." Players can now accompany Larethil Sablewind—a wood elf in search of "three corrupted Seedstones"—on a mission to restore the Winterroot Tree.

This Skyrim Fan Expansion Will Keep You Busy

The Heart of Winterroot SE mod for Skyrim was just released by modder Sons of Vuldur on January 7, introducing an entirely new questline, "fully voiced" characters, locations, challenges, and more. Players can download the mod for free now and explore the following new locations:

  • Mosslight Tower – abandoned Imperial tower south of Old Hroldan across the river, southwest of Rorikstead
  • Wildwood Breach – abandoned mine overrun by bandits, south of Falkreath, east of Halldir's Cairn
  • Wildwood Grove – hidden valley accessible through Wildwood Breach
  • Feylight Grotto – abandoned tower in the Rift, west of Shor's Stone
  • Mzulvarn – Dwemer ruin northwest of Windhelm

The Heart of Winterroot adds an entirely new and fully voiced questline, where players travel alongside Larethil Sablewind and try to "stop a twisted druid" who "bends nature to his will," ultimately trying to restore the Winterroot Tree and save it from corruption. The mod can be installed at any point in your playthrough without the need for a new save file, and is recommended for level 10+.

Importantly, the modder (who goes by venjhammet) has offered the following caveat regarding the voiced dialogue in the mod:

All voice lines are AI-generated using xVASynth and MiniMax. If AI voices are not to your liking, I understand—but unfortunately, I do not have the resources to hire voice actors or manage volunteers.

Skyrim Will Never Die (Until TES6 Launches)

Whether you're a thousand hours into Skyrim or just looking for something new to do in the game, mods like The Heart of Winterroot are proof that the game will simply never die, at least until The Elder Scrolls 6 eventually comes out. It's a good thing too, because despite some optimistic estimates for a 2028 launch, TES6 could take well beyond that, given how massive the game will be.
