Season 34 of the reality competition dance series concluded last night, with Irwin coming out on top. Final dances included a quickstep, cha cha, and freestyle.
Irwin scored victory over runner-up Alix Earle. Olympian Jordan Chiles took the bronze medal slot, with Dylan Efron and Elaine Hendrix filling the 4th and 5th place slots, respectively.
In a conversation with Good Morning America (via Yahoo), Irwin speaks out about his Dancing with the Stars win and fighting through injury to get there. The winner said that the win was "painful" but despite the injury, he and partner Witney Carson "knew [they] just ahd to make it work."
This, overall, led to a great experience for Irwin, who described it as "the greatest thing," and reflected on his own sister's win. Check out the full quote from Irwin below:
It's painful, but, you know, no pain, no gain, but it's all good.
We just knew we had to make it work, because it was the way to just say we're so grateful for this experience.
We were just having that much fun that I didn't even realize there was an issue till the end. It is literally the greatest thing I think I've ever got to be part of.
I remember watching my sister raise that Mirrorball trophy 10 years ago to the day ... and it just felt like, 'Wow, what a privilege that we are here,' and that pressure was there, but it was just the pressure to be the best version of ourselves. We just wanted to say thank you because I had no idea what to expect coming over, but the way everybody in America was just so kind and so embracing, I mean, it felt like flying.
Carson also chimed in to comment on this experience, saying:
That trick right there that you just saw, I get tossed by the guys, and Robert usually catches me, and there was one time that we did it, and it just like killed his ribs, so I took it out. His health is my No. 1 priority.
The first time I won, I was 19 years old, and now I'm 32 so I have kids now, and so, to celebrate with them and my husband was so special. And then the fact that [host] Alfonso [Ribeiro] gave me the Mirrorball [trophy], it's kind of like, really full circle for me, and just to have Robert as my partner. I mean, you guys know how special he is. He's exactly this way in real life, which is crazy, but it was a very memorable, special season.

As Irwin references, his own famous sister, Bindi Irwin, is also a former Dancing with the Stars champion. Bindi and professional dance partner Derek Hough took home the trophy for season 21 back in 2015. Bindi Irwin was only 17 years old at the time of her win.
As such, things have come full circle upon Robert Irwin's win this year. Now, there are two winners in the Irwin family, both of which reported to channeling the love of their late father Steve Irwin during their dances.
The younger Irwin's win did not come easily. As the champion alludes to, he suffered from a rib injury in the moments leading up to the final night that affected his performance. Specifically, it made breathing more difficult.
Still, Irwin prevailed, and made this a special night for Carson as well. Carson previously won Dancing with the Stars season 19 with Alfonso Ribeiro as her partner. This year, Ribeiro served as one of the hosts, leading to a full-circle moment in the finale.
Overall, it sounds like the Dancing with the Stars season 34 outcome was extremely special for both winners. Irwin engaged in an emotional season, regularly referencing his father and his influence. Though some may have been upset at Chiles' loss or any of the other finalists, it is clear that Irwin had a commendable season performance.
More to come...
