Going into Bayern Munich’s match against Arsenal FC in the Champions League, every Bayern player will have heard of the Londoners’ prowess from set pieces. It is rather well known. However, any preparations made to deal with that prowess was sorely lacking, with the Gunners able to create multiple clear cut chances from dead balls. The most important set piece of all was the one that led to the opening goal of the match, as Jurriën Timber headed home Bukayo Saka’s delivery from a corner kick. There was initial debate about whether Timber had illegally pushed Manuel Neuer out of the way a few seconds prior to his header, before the ball was even kicked, but Neuer does not want to dwell on it:
“He threw me off balance, so I was in a different position than the one I wanted to have,” Bayern’s captain explained, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We know how they do things in their set pieces, I think the referees know that too. But in general, you have to play on until the referee whistles. Nevertheless, there’s no criticism from my side.”
