Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and the rest of Equestria’s beloved crew are all set to return after BOOM! Studios has just acquired the license to continue the Friendship Is Magic era with a new line of comics. The move marks a major shift for the franchise as BOOM! takes over from IDW Publishing, which previously held the rights for more than a decade.
The news was confirmed by BOOM! Studios' publisher Michael Kelly, in a conversation with Publishers Weekly. Kelly, who was formerly Hasbro’s VP of global publishing, noted that the 2010 series helped redefine the My Little Pony brand for a wide audience. In his exact words: “It’s hard to imagine now, but at that time nobody believed there was a market for My Little Pony comics or any comics that were not for 18-plus-year-old males.” Kelly emphasized that the show’s success far exceeded its origins as a toy-driven series for young girls, which featured “pastel-colored ponies.”
Kelly reassured fans that the new comics will build on the franchise’s reputation for layered storytelling and characters that appeal to all ages. The exciting announcement comes alongside BOOM!’s acquisition of Jem and the Holograms, another Hasbro favorite from the 1980s. The studio’s Jem series will kick off with a deluxe collector’s edition set to launch on Kickstarter in November, while new storytelling is expected to begin in 2026.
Hasbro and Kayou Debut ‘My Little Pony’ Trading Card Game
Hasbro, in collaboration with China’s leading collectibles company Kayou, debuted MY LITTLE PONY Card Game - Friendships Begin at the 2025 New York Comic Con, where fans got an early preview. The trading cards are set for a retail launch in early 2026 and will let players step into the world of Friendship Is Magic through fast-paced, story-driven battles. The gameplay is designed for ages 6 and up, with each match lasting about 20 to 30 minutes as two players build decks, complete challenges, and advance their own friendship-themed storylines featuring the Mane 6.
The game was co-developed by Kayou and Hasbro, and each of the six collectible starter decks comes with a ready-to-play 70-card deck along with three five-card booster packs. The cards feature brand-new illustrations by official My Little Pony artists rendered in foils, embossed textures, and laser-etched finishes across nine rarity levels, including “Shining Ruby Rare” and "Shining Emerald Rare.”
As reported by PR Newswire, Marianne James, Hasbro’s Senior Vice President of Global Licensing, shared that while the U.S. trading-card game scene continues to expand, it has not yet seen true success with a dedicated, girl-focused TCG. “MY LITTLE PONY Card Game - Friendships Begin is designed to fill that gap, appealing to fans who love MY LITTLE PONY, enjoy strategic card play, and value the joy of challenge, adventure, and community,” she added.
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is available to stream on Tubi. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the new comic series.
