Beau Burrows elected to try out Free Agency back on November 6, but after just a short time on the open market, he’s back with the Pittsburgh Pirates, signing a Minor League deal this week after less than a month as a free agent.

The 29-year-old right-handed reliever had an up-and-down 2025 season in the Minors, looking pretty good in Bradenton, Greensboro and Altoona, but struggling in Indianapolis. He was best in Altoona, allowing a single earned run in 20 innings, for a 0.44 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 212 strikeouts in those 20 innings.

It was a different story in Indianapolis, where he also pitched 20 innings, but finished with a 6.20 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP and 19 strikeouts. He also walked 9 batters, the most of any of his Minor League stops.

It appears that Burrows ceiling may be Triple-A. He’s had a few chances in the Majors after being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He’s appeared in just 11 total games in the Majors between the Tigers and the Minnesota Twins and carries a 10.70 lifetime ERA in the Majors with a 1.91 WHIP.

It’ll take some improvement at the Triple-A level in order for him to make the 26-man roster, but he should be a solid piece in Pittsburgh’s Minor League system and a possible emergency arm if the Bucs find themselves short on bullpen help at any point in the season.

Burrow has also spent time with the Minor League teams of the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves, as well as Tecos de los Dos Laredos of the Mexican League.
