Local columnist, beat reporter analyze win over MD, what's next for Jonathan Smith

What is next for Michigan State football? That is the question Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal and Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press discussed following the Spartans' win over Maryland late on Saturday night.

Michigan State picked up a win for the first time in months on Saturday in the Motor City, knocking off Maryland by the final score of 38-28 from Ford Field in Detroit. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Spartans and was their first in conference play this season.

Saturday was the final game of the season for the Spartans, who finished 4-8 overall and will not be heading to a bowl game for a fourth straight season. So following the game, many started to look ahead to the future of Michigan State football and specifically what will happen with head coach Jonathan Smith. He is currently on the hot seat and we don't know at this time if he'll be back for his third season at Michigan State or if athletic director J Batt will move on in a different direction.

Couch and Solari discussed the fate of Smith and where things stand following the win over Maryland on Saturday. For Couch, it's evident he doesn't believe Smith will be retained for a third year. Solari doesn't seem so sure about a change coming.
