The Los Angeles Rams’ time atop the NFC was short-lived. After taking over the No. 1 seed in the conference last week when the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Dallas Cowboys, the Rams have given it away – this time to a new team.
By losing to the Carolina Panthers in a stunning upset, the Rams ceded the top seed to the Chicago Bears, of all teams. The Bears are now No. 1 in the NFC, owning the conference record tiebreaker over the Rams.

The Seahawks are lurking at No. 5, with a chance to tie the Rams at 9-3 by beating the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, Los Angeles has the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Seahawks thanks to their win earlier in the season.
This was a terrible missed opportunity by the Rams, not only to pad their cushion for the top seed in the NFC, but also to maintain a one-game lead over the Seahawks in the West. Now, the Seahawks can pull into a tie with the Rams for the division lead, controlling their own destiny if they win out.
By no means does this loss take the Rams out of contention for a first-round bye, but they'll now need the Bears to trip up at some point down the road. Chicago still has to face the Packers twice, the Browns once, the 49ers once and the Lions in the season finale.
