Moises Caicedo’s dangerous tackle was rightly given a red card by VAR in today’s draw with Arsenal, and at full time Sky Sports had a good summary of the situation from their man on the ground, Nick Wright.

“The sending-off left Chelsea in a familiar position. At least they had got some practice in playing with 10 men. But they were the better side before it. A battling point draw might have been a win had it not been for Caicedo’s rush of blood to the head,” Wright wrote.

“Caicedo had been outstanding this season. In fact he had arguably been their best player having added goals to his game. But his rashness, in a game when his team-mates needed him, was a reminder that he still has plenty to learn.

“Ultimately, the ill-discipline undermined Chelsea. And not for the first time this season. Maresca needs to eradicate the issue.”

It’s a fourth red card, a ridiculous record. And it’s going to hurt Chelsea, not just in this game. Caicedo will now be banned for 3 games – away trips to Leeds and Bournemouth, as well as Everton’s visit to Stamford Bridge.

He won’t be back domestically until we face Cardiff on December the 16th. Andrey Santos better be preparing himself for some serious game time. Dario Essugo’s return has come at a good time too he will need a couple of weeks to get up to speed, but should then get action right away.

In other news…

Reece James was a machine for Chelsea out there, single handedly keeping Arsenal at bay at times. His stats from the game were just silly.

James’ heroic performance in midfield against the Gunners, was also noted by Sky Sports, and the captain was lavished with praise by pundits at full time.
