In their Week 10 matchup against the Washington Commanders, head coach Dan Campbell decided to take over playcalling. After a significant win, he announced that he would maintain the responsibility for the duration of the season, leaving John Morris as his go-to for advice and suggestions as they trudge on. Since this change, the Lions have struggled keeping a winning streak, however; losing to strong defenses like the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers, and a close victory against the New York Giants.

Now that holes are forming in their offense, like key playmaker Amon-Ra St. Brown out with an injury, and relying strongly on Campbell’s strength, the run game, will their plan continue as is? Coach says yes, but improvements are crucial to get back to winning.

Dan Campbell reiterated on Saturday that he will resume playcalling as Detroit welcomes the Dallas Cowboys for their Week 14 TNF premiere. Campbell feels the team collectively needs to improve, their detail and discipline in particular. Detroit finds themselves in a predicament where the defense needs to bail them out, and Campbell notes digging themselves a little hole. Unfortunately, in some circumstances, they aren’t able to dig themselves back out; a lack of consistency on offense if you will.

Despite feeling confident in his playcalling abilities, Campbell is feeling frustrated at times with how things are playing out. That lack of consistency. He recalls back to errors from the Packers game, an illegal formation penalty for example, and how these mistakes shouldn’t occur. It isn’t for a lack of talent in those instances, it’s the little things that the team should have control over, but the flaws in discipline seep in and hurt the team. But Campbell takes full responsibility for these shortcomings and plans on hitting it head on as he prepares for Week 14.

In addition, he plans on facing the Cowboys with precision, discipline, and adjusting things that went wrong last week. He’s watching film, counting how long it takes for the ball to get off, the depth of the pocket, and evaluating what needs to be changed. He noted there were three instances he noticed where the time was there, but they weren’t getting where they needed to be, and that needs to be cleaned up moving forward. “We gotta be better,” he states. This includes playcalling, overall performance, use of timeouts, and so on. But Campbell will continue taking the reins and leading the offense, fully confident in the team’s ability to turn things around. He left the media with a simple statement regarding the matter: “It’s the right thing to do with where we’re at right now.”
