Georgia's playoffs were upended this week by one result on the field and another one off the field.

On the field, the No. 13/SN No. 10 Carrollton [GA] Trojans stunned the No. 2/SN No. 2 Grayson Rams in a 34-14 blowout win Friday night, shaking up Georgia's Class 6A playoff picture while also altering the national championship scene. Grayson was poised to jump over the No. 1 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders with a win in the national Top 25, but instead, it's the Trojans who make a major move to No. 5 while inserting themselves into the national title conversation.

Meanwhile, off the field, the ongoing saga of the Gainesville [GA] Red Elephants will spill into Monday when the team's playoff future could be decided by the Georgia Court of Appeals. The Red Elephants were involved in a brawl against the Brunswick [GA] Pirates on November 21, and ultimately, all the players that left the bench for both teams were issued suspensions.

For Gainesville, that meant more than 30 players were suspended for their quarterfinal matchup against the undefeated Langston Hughes [Fairburn, GA] Panthers. Gainesville then won an injunction midweek restoring the players' eligibility, but an immediate appeal by the Georgia High School Association was unable to be heard before the scheduled game between the Red Elephants and the Panthers. The appeal is expected to be heard as early as Monday, at which point Gainesville's fate will likely be known.

If the Red Elephants are able to continue, then the game with Langston Hughes will have to be quickly rescheduled in order for the winning team to be able to compete in the semifinals against the Rome [GA] Wolves who beat the Jackson County [Jefferson, GA] Panthers, 31-17, in the state's other Class 5A quarterfinal Friday night.

On the other hand, if the suspensions are upheld, then Gainesville will likely be forced to forfeit, and Langston Hughes would advance with the semifinal matchup against Rome likely to be held as scheduled this Friday. Langston Hughes is the big loser in this whole ordeal as the Panthers don't know, yet, if they're preparing for Gainesville or Rome.
