While Netflix might not be known for its fantasy offerings, it does have a few key series. There are big series the streaming giant has sunk millions of dollars into, like The Witcher and Avatar The Last Airbender, but also more than a few smaller shows that appeal to more of a niche audience, such as anime like Frieren.
Despite the variety of Fantasy available on Netflix, however, its best fantasy anime punches well above its weight and competes against the streamer's biggest series.
While it's only been out for a little more than a year, Delicious in Dungeon stands out as Netflix's best fantasy series.
Delicious In Dungeon Does What Netflix's Other Fantasy Series Fail To Do
Delicious in Dungeon cast of Laios, Marcille, and Senshi running away from the dragon
Based on the acclaimed manga by Ryoko Kui, Delicious in Dungeon isn't just Netflix's best fantasy anime, it's the streamer's best fantasy period. The series follows a group of adventurers consisting of the human fighter Laos, the elf mage Marcille, the half-foot rogue Chilchuck, and the dwarf barbarian Senshi.
After a total party wipe results in Laos' sister Falin being eaten by a dragon, the party is left with no resources and no choice but to descend back into the dungeon so they can resurrect Falin. To accomplish this, the party learns the art of killing and eating monsters.
Delicious in Dungeon ranks among the best fantasy anime ever. The series has impeccable world-building, with the environment of the series' main dungeon being well-thought-out.
The dungeon the characters inhabit is a legitimate ecosystem, and it's easy to see how the various monsters interact with each other and their environment.
Delicious In Dungeon Is Everything Good Fantasy Should Be
Delicious In Dungeon Part 2 key visual depicting the full cast standing confidently and facing forward.
Appropriate for a series about contrasts, Delicious in Dungeon mixes a cozy atmosphere with legitimate conflicts.
While the bond between Laos, Marcille, Chilchuck, and Senshi is always heartwarming, they do have disagreements that will make viewers question which side they would take.
In addition to all of its legitimately great fantasy elements, Delicious in Dungeon is also just incredibly funny. Laos' obsession with eating monsters is always off-putting and hilarious in equal measure.
Balancing even one of these elements is often difficult for fantasy series, but the fact that Delicious in Dungeon juggles all of them without much effort is a miracle.
There is an element to the series of a really good role-playing campaign where everything is working exactly the way it should. Delicious in Dungeon might be the best Dungeons and Dragons anime fans will ever get.
Netflix has plenty of great fantasy for fans of the genre. When looking at all the fantasy on the streaming giant, however, it's clear that Delicious in Dungeon stands head and shoulders above its competition.
