After a three-year wait, the first volume of Stranger Things season five has finally premiered, setting up a climactic showdown between the series' protagonists and their ultimate enemy, Vecna. Created by the Duffer Brothers, the Netflix series stars Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie SInk, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, Charlie Heaton, David Harbour, and Winona Ryder.
One of the biggest loose threads from the end of Stranger Things season four was what would happen to Max Mayfield (Sink), after a psychic encounter with Vecna left her in a coma. Now, following the release of the first four episodes of season five, it has been revealed that Max's consciousness is trapped in the Upside Down.
"In past seasons, there’s always been something to anchor me to the character, whether it’s the actors I’m with or the environment, or even just the clothes, the bands, the skateboard," Sink told The Hollywood Reporter. "But this season, there was nothing. It was clothes that didn’t feel like Max, crazy hair that was grown out and tangled, and dirt all over my face."
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day star continued: "She’s in a rough, feral state. It was pretty bizarre. It was weird to feel like Max and then look like that and be in that environment." For the first stretch of the season, Max's fate is a mystery, but after Holly Wheeler is taken by Vecna, she crosses paths with the younger girl.

"I know how Max responds to Lucas or Mike or Eleven or Will, but to a 12-year-old girl? I didn’t know what that was like," Sink added. The storyline "revealed that Max is a really caring person" through the way that she accepts Holly "as an ally and extends that respect" instead of seeing her as only a little girl.
Though Sink did not get into any specifics regarding the rest of the season, she stated that she was "so happy with the way [Stranger Things] ends." She added: "I feel like we’ve left it all out on the table, and it’s at a good closing point, but I don’t know. I could do it again. Because I love that set so much, and I love the character."
"I don’t think I really said goodbye to Max yet; I don’t think I ever really will," Sink concluded. Stranger Things season five volume one is now streaming on Netflix, while volume two and the finale will release on December 25, 2025, and December 31, 2025.
