Zootopia 2's Box Office Record Sets It Up To Demolish The Original’s $1B Results

Zootopia 2's box office results are already charting what looks to be a $1B+ path for the movie, which could make it one of 2025's biggest films.

Zootopia 2's new box office record sets a seriously promising precedent for the series - and already paves the way for the sequel to absolutely demolish the original theatrical results of 2015's Zootopia. 2025 has been a mixed year for movies, with the superhero genre seeing some lower results than it has in many years prior, but with Ne Zha 2 and Lilo & Stitch netting themselves $1B+ box offices in the same time span.

Zootopia 2 seems to be set on the right track to join these latter films, as its initial box office results are already a major advancement on the previous film in the series. Indeed, given the record these early results provide for Zootopia 2, the film appears to be set for a major overall box office gross when it comes to its full theatrical run.

Zootopia 2's Initial Box Office Results Set It Up To Beat The Original Movie's Results

Nine years after Zootopia's respectable $75 million opening weekend results (via The Numbers), Zootopia 2's early results show the series has garnered far more initial theatrical interest. Zootopia 2's global debut comes in at a major $556 million, which is notable given this result is currently the fourth-highest global debut of all time (as per Variety), beaten only by MCU goliaths Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With all of these other films having grossed near or over $2 billion with their own respective runs, Zootopia 2 being in close proximity to them bodes decidedly well for the sequel - especially given Zootopia already netted itself an overall worldwide box office result of just over $1 billion in the first place, and given Zootopia 2's initial results would already put it in 2025's top ten highest-grossing movies.

Zootopia 2 garnering these promising results makes particular sense given the popularity of the original film, which blossomed over time and saw the 2016 film also bring home a not inconsiderable $111 million in domestic video sales - a number that's higher than Avengers: Endgame's fiscal results in this field, and one that's also sure to have expanded the number of viewers who saw Zootopia 2 in the first days of its theatrical release.

Zootopia 2's Success Bodes Well For Zootopia 3

Zootopia 2 already breaking ahead and build on the success of the original 2016 movie is especially exciting to note given Zootopia 2's post-credits scene appears to tease the premise of Zootopia 3, which looks set to explore the lore around birds in this world, and why they've thus far been another part of the animal kingdom we've seen little about.

A major box office success would not only provide the Zootopia series with more resources to put into a third film, but also provide financial proof that the direction Zootopia 2 has taken with the world and its characters is resonating with audiences - giving all the more reason for Zootopia 3 to lean further into what makes the movies work, both in terms of the series' visuals, and in terms of its endearing stories and lead characters.
