The New York Giants were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday -- the NFL's first exit this season and the team's earliest since 1976. It was also a tipping point for the defense, which surrendered its fifth 10-plus-point lead on the road this season, and the fourth fourth-quarter lead.

In the aftermath of the heartbreaking overtime loss in Detroit, the Giants fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, replacing him with Charlie Bullen.

With rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart expected to return this week, the Giants will take on the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football before entering their bye.

As we enter Week 13, here's a look at where the Giants place in a multitude of power rankings.

Nate Davis, USA TODAY: 28 (-2)

Maybe they've lost a league-most five fourth-quarter leads. But they've also managed to convert Jameis Winston into a tight end, which is far more notable.

It’s awesome that the Giants put on a thrilling show with Jameis Winston at quarterback. It was also fitting they found a way to lose to the Lions in overtime. Had they won, the discussion this week would be if interim head coach Mike Kafka has a shot at getting the job permanently.

Diante Lee, The Ringer: 26 (NC)

We might not get a better play this season than Jameis Winston’s touchdown catch. The Giants quarterback showed off an athleticism I didn’t think he had. Winston adjusted to the ball, froze Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes with a juke, and then powered through the attempted tackle before scoring—and at that point, I was totally bought into the Giants’ chances of winning Sunday’s game against the Lions.

New York ultimately lost because it’s not as good or talented as Detroit, but it was fun to see this team compete against a real contender.

Vinnie Iyer, The Sporting News: 28 (+1)

The Giants should be happy with how ready Jameis Winston and their offense was to carry the team minus Jaxson Dart but they can't be pleased how their defense kept giving up too many big runs and big passes in Detroit despite a talented pass rush.

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports: 26 (+1)

The Jameis Winston experience is fun, but it still didn't produce a victory. Does firing the defensive coordinator really matter?

Conor Orr, Sports Illustrated: 28 (-1)

I thought that the firing of Shane Bowen from the Giants was interesting this late in the season. While it could simply be an emotional reaction to another late-game collapse, this was not the first or second time something similar happened to the Giants…and those collapses were blamed on Brian Daboll. Is this a sign that the team wants Mike Kafka to go out and win this gig?

Josh Kendall, The Athletic: 28 (NC)

Why was Russell Wilson ever starting?

It seems like ages ago, but Wilson was actually the Giants’ starting quarterback for the first three games this fall. After they switched to Jaxson Dart, the offense clearly improved. And even if they didn’t want to start a rookie out of the gates, Jameis Winston showed Sunday that he brings more juice to the offense than Wilson.

Barry Werner, List Wire: 30 (+1)

The Giants were the first NFL team to be eliminated from playoff possibilities.

Walter Football: 25 (NC)

I’d love to know why Brian Daboll went with Russell Wilson over Jameis Winston early in the season. I didn’t even know why they signed Wilson when they already had Winston. It was obvious that Winston was better than Wilson could have ever been against the Packers and Lions.

Thanksgiving game memory: Linebacker Lawrence Taylor's interception in 1982

It was Thanksgiving Day in Detroit when Taylor won the game for the Giants with a 97-yard interception returned for a touchdown. Giants coach Bill Parcells wasn't even sure Taylor would play in the game. He had hurt his knee the prior week, so Parcells didn't start him and didn't even put him in until the second quarter. That decision was rewarded with an interception of Gary Danielson in the fourth quarter to break a 6-6 tie.
